Lemon verbena (Aloysia triphylla) is a perennial shrub which produces small purple and white flowers that is native to South America. It has a powerful lemony aroma that intensifies when the leaves and flowers are touched or bruised. Essential oil extracted from lemon verbena contains high amounts of antioxidants, specifically verbascoside, nerol, geraniol, and citral. Specific applications studied in poultry include:
  • Heat stress: A research study was conducted on 160 broiler chickens to investigate the effect of lemon verbena powder and vitamin C on performance and immunity of broilers under heat stress. Results of the study confirmed that supplementing chickens' diet with 1.0% lemon verbena powder and 250 mg/kg of vitamin C added to the diet helped to suppress the negative effects caused by heat stress.
