Cannabidiol (CBD) is a major bioactive, non-intoxicating cannabinoid in Cannabis sativa (Cannabis) plants. It has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anticonvulsant, anxiolytic, anti-epileptic, neuroprotective and antitumor properties. The best-known mechanism of action is the mediation of endocannabinoid receptors which may show benefit for treating chronic pain and diseases that have pain as a consequence of neuropathy.
There aren’t many studies conducted on the use of CBD in animals. Five peer-reviewed studies have shown the positive effects of the use of CBD for control of chronic pain in dogs due to osteoarthritis. One published study demonstrated that administering CBD in dogs helped decrease seizure frequency and severity for dogs with intractable idiopathic epilepsy.
