The Unusual Pet Vets Sydney

Located in Waterloo, we are Sydney’s trusted experts in caring exclusively for exotic pet species.

As the latest addition to our family of clinics, our Waterloo location brings the same high standards of veterinary care that our clients have come to expect across Australia.

Founded in 2012 by Dr James Haberfield, The Unusual Pet Vets was established to meet the unique healthcare needs of exotic pets.

Our dedicated team is highly trained and experienced in caring for birds, reptiles, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, mice and rats, axolotls, frogs, aquatic pets, and invertebrates.

Our new Waterloo vet clinic is easily accessible for residents of Sydney and the surrounding suburbs.

Long-time exotic pet owners and those new to the world of unusual pets will find the support and care they need with our team.

Shelby Chew, DVM BVetBiol, DVM

Dr Shelby graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Veterinary Biology and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2019. She then spent time at various exotics, zoo, and wildlife clinics, including one in South Africa. From there, she spent two years as a small animal and shelter veterinarian in Sydney and, in 2021, joined the Bird & Exotics team.

Shelby loves all creatures great and small but has a soft spot for birds and rabbits. She is especially passionate about animal welfare.

Dr Shelby was a recipient of the Stephen Ross Memorial Scholarship in 2023, where she presented her paper “A Case of Pulmonary and Airsac Proteinosis in a Green-Cheeked Conure (Pyrrhura molinae)” at the Unusual Pet and Avian Veterinarians conference.

Dr Shelby is on the Australian Veterinary Association Unusual Pets and Avian Veterinarians (UPAV) committee.

Tegan Stephens, DVM BVSc MANZCVS

Thanks to a childhood growing up surrounded by the Australian bush and the jungles of Borneo, Dr Tegan has always been fascinated by reptiles and other unusual animals. In her journey to become an exotics vet, she also discovered a deep love of rabbits and other small mammals and the fun and fascination that comes with birds.

This all led her to sit for her memberships in Unusual Pet Medicine and Surgery with the Australian Vet College in 2013, becoming one of the first vets in NSW to hold this qualification.

Dr Tegan is a founding member of the Unusual Pet Medicine Chapter in the College and has been a committee member of the Unusual Pet and Avian Vet special interest group of the Australian Veterinary Association for the majority of her working life and regularly presents at their conferences.

Dr Tegan’s particular interests include rabbit ear and dental surgery, soft tissue surgery, ultrasonography, reptile medicine, behaviour, enrichment, and fish and amphibian medicine.

Tegan has worked at this hospital in various positions since her first year of vet school in 2005 and has been the veterinary manager and superintendent since 2021. She is immensely proud of the hospital and its amazing team and is excited for the future ahead.
Hobbies and Interest

Having two young children doesn’t leave a lot of time for hobbies, but Tegan does love travelling, reading (particularly sci-fi and fantasy), cross-stitch embroidery, karaoke nights with the team from work, and escaping to the beaches of the NSW central coast as often as possible.
