Decreasing day lengths will often trigger chickens to undergo a molt which typically lasts 8 to 16 weeks. The molting process involves shedding old feathers and developing new ones in their place. Molting is associated with changes in metabolism and neuroendrocrine regulation. The reason hens stop laying eggs is because their reproductive hormones decrease.
