Pearl Millet

Pennisetum glaucum

Pearl Millet (Pennisetum glaucum) is a type of grain that is high in protein and antioxidants, and a gluten-free whole grain. Studies suggest that it can be used in replace of maize (corn) in the diets of laying hens in order to reduce the amount of flaxseed needed to increase omega-3 fatty acids in the diet of hens.

Pearl Millet does not usually contain significant amounts of condensed polyphenols, such as the tannins commonly found in other staple crops such as sorghum, which can decrease digestibility.
