Citrus Peels


Citrus sinensis

Sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) peel is a major source of vitamin C and pectin that is a non-digestible carbohydrate that stimulates the growth of probiotic bacteria in the colon. Specific applications studied in poultry include:
  • Deworming: Using citrus peel extract (600-1200 mg/kg for 14 days) resulted in a significant reduction in Ascaridia galli (roundworms) loads in infected chickens.
  • Immune enhancement: Dietary supplementation of sweet orange peel extract (1000 ppm) may improve immunity.
  • Antioxidant: Dried orange residues were shown to improve some performance (e.g. feed intake and body weight gain), decrease liver and abdominal fat and also serum triglyceride level.
