Safflower (Carthamus Tinctorius) is a plant of the Compositae family that has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries, for its high edible and medicinal value. Safflower is native to Asia, parts of Africa and parts of the Middle East.
Adding 50 to 100 mg/kg of safflower oil to the diet of broilers showed it to be a beneficial immune system booster for the birds. It resulted in reduced lipid peroxidation activity, enhanced activities of antioxidative enzymes, and improved the cell-mediated immune responses.
The active ingredients include carthamin, precarthamin, safflower yellow A and B, and safflomin A. The oil contains palmitic acid, myristic acid, lauric acid, stearic acid, arachidic acid, and oleic acid.
