Broward Avian & Exotic Animal Hospital

Broward Avian & Exotic Animal Hospital is a veterinary hospital that provides care to a wide range of species--including mammals, birds (such as poultry!), wildlife, reptiles, and amphibians.
Lauren Thielen, DVM

Dr. Thielen is originally from Texas and attended Texas A&M University (TAMU) College of Veterinary Medicine. Upon graduation, she was awarded the Kaytee Avian and Special Species Award for her interest in and contribution to avian research and medicine. Because of her passion of exotic animal medicine, Dr. Thielen came for a 1-year exotic animal medicine internship at Broward Avian and Exotic Animal Hospital with Dr. Kelleher. She then went on to complete a 2-year avian residency at the Veterinary Center for Birds & Exotics in Bedford Hills, New York, where she was able to work towards her life-long goal of becoming a board certified avian specialist. Dr. Thielen serves as the Marketing Chair for the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians. She is also a member of the Association of Avian Veterinarians and the American Veterinary Medical Association. Before her time at TAMU, Dr. Thielen worked as a veterinary technician for 4 years during which time she participated in wildlife rehabilitation, one of her many passions. Other exotic animal experiences include working at the animal health department of the Columbus Zoo and conducting field research on macaws in the heart of the Amazon rainforest at the Tambopata Research Center in Peru.

Matt Grootenboer, DVM

Dr. Matt Grootenboer graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 2015. He completed an internship at a small animal emergency and specialty hospital in his home state of New Jersey before moving down to the Sunshine State to follow his dream of working with companion exotic species. Dr. G has a passion for wildlife and zoo species, as well, having worked at several zoos (Six Flags Great Adventure Wild Safari and Philadelphia Zoo among others) as everything from a veterinary assistant to an animal trainer/tour guide. He believes strongly in the role of zoos to spread the message of conservation.

Susan Kelleher, DVM

Dr. Kelleher is originally from Buffalo, NY. Don’t worry Dolphin Fans, she doesn’t know football well and roots for anybody who scores! She received her Bachelor’s degree with a dual major in Chemistry and Biology from Alfred University in 1990 and went on to veterinary school at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine.
