Metronidazole is a type of antibiotic used to treat certain protozoal infections and anaerobic bacterial infections. Because metronidazole only has activity against anaerobic bacteria, it is used commonly with other antibiotics when it is used to treat mixed-bacterial infections. It is compatible with many other antibiotics including penicillin antibiotics, aminoglycosides and some cephalosporins.
Metronidazole comes available as tablets (250 or 500 mg) to be given orally or as an injectable solution (5 mg/mL) for slow IM administration. Resistant organisms may require two daily injections followed by two more doses repeated in 14 days.
- Orally: 10-30 mg/kg, BID for 10 days.
- IM: 10 mg/kg SID for 2 days.
