Metronidazole (Flagyl, Protostat)


Metronidazole (Flagyl, Protostat) is an oral or IV injectable bacteriocidal antibiotic/antiprotozoal agent. It is used to treat bacterial infections caused by anaerobic bacteria (such as Clostridium), and Giardia and other GI protozoal flagellates.

Drug Form: Metronidazole comes available as tablets (250 or 500 mg) to be given orally or as an injectable solution (5 mg/mL) for slow IM administration. Resistant organisms may require two daily injections followed by two more doses repeated in 14 days.

Typical Dosage:
  • Orally: 10-30 mg/kg, BID for 10 days.
  • IM: 10 mg/kg SID for 2 days.
