Hymenolepis cantaniana is a type of tapeworm that is an internal parasite of chickens. H. cantaniana is a 20 mm (0.8 in) long, 1 mm wide, flattened, segmented, ribbon-shaped worm that invades the chicken's small intestines.
H. cantaniana has an indirect life cycle, using beetles as intermediate hosts. Chickens become infected by consuming the H. cantaniana eggs shed in the feces of infected chickens or dung beetles. Each beetle can carry 100 or more cysticercoids.
