Brachyspira hyodysenteriae

Brachyspira are anaerobic, Gram-negative bacteria that are believed to be endemic worldwide. Feral birds, rodents and domestic animals harbor Brachyspira which is then passed through their feces into the environment. Fowl ticks have also been shown to be carriers of Brachyspira.

Brachyspira are able to remain infectious for up to 66 days in water.
