Colorful Balls

Research conducted by Sherwin 1995 found that brightly colored spherical objects [balls 4-9 cm in diameter] placed in the feed trough are considered to be a promising method of successful environmental enrichment [simulating ground-litter] for caged laying hens. Access to enrichment items (e.g., corks, buttons, balls) can reduce the incidence of cannibalism in young birds (Yasutomi et al., 1987).
