Dexamethasone (Decadron, Dexafort) is a potent corticosteroid (more precisely a glucocorticosteroid), as well as an anti-inflammatory medication. It relieves inflammation in various parts of the body. It is most frequently used to decrease swelling (edema) in the brain, spine, or bone. This also makes dexamethasone beneficial for birds with tumors, because it can decrease the pressure of the tumor on nerve endings and relieve pain or other symptoms caused by the pressing tumor.
Caution: Extreme caution should be associated with giving this drug to poultry, especially "broilers" and large chicken breeds. Studies have shown that treating birds with dexamethasone interferes with their glucose and lipid metabolism, leading to heart problems and metabolic disorders.
Drug form: It comes available as an injectable solution (2 or 4 mg/ml), given IM or IV.
Typical dosage: 0.05-2 mg/kg, given IM or IV once a day, for 2 days.
