Egg productivity gradually starts to decline when a hen reaches about 2.5 to 3 years of age. Older hens are also more likely to lay irregular eggs.

Feed changesAs hens start to lay less eggs, the amount of calcium they need in their diet will also decline. Therefore to prevent nutritional imbalances and kidney damage (which can occur as a result of excess calcium), the amount of calcium in the hens diet should be reduced accordingly.
