The Jersey Giant was created by John and Thomas Black in the state of New Jersey in 1880. Their intent was to replace the turkey with an equally-sized large breed of chicken. They were created by cross breeding the Langshan, Java, and Brahma. In 1922, the Black Jersey Giant was added to the Standard of Perfection of the American Poultry Association. The white variety was added in 1947, and the blue in 2002.
